Environmental performed vibracoring in New Bedford Harbor in support of Foster
Wheeler Environmental Corporation’s Total Environmental Restoration Contract (TERC)
with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
Sediment cores were collected at 70 locations in the upper, lower, and a
portion of the outer harbor to help fill data gaps relative to PCB contamination
distribution and help in the remedial design for the cleanup of the harbor. A
sub-meter Trimble DGPS and the HYPACK survey software were utilized to position
the vessel to within 5 to 10 feet of the designated coordinates. A
Rossfelder P-1 electric vibracorer was utilized to obtain 2 to 4 ft cores in
the soft harbor sediments and a mechanical vibracore system was used to obtain
cores in the sandier sediments of the outer harbor. Reference: Jay
